Use the due date for your actual vehicle
A Cyprus roadworthiness test is a statutory technical inspection, commonly called an MOT in English. The official inspection-centre framework describes authorised centres and their regulatory role. Book with a centre authorised for the relevant vehicle category.
A frequently reported timetable for an ordinary private passenger car is the first test after four years, then every two years. We have not completed a current primary-source check of every category and imported-vehicle exception, so do not use that shorthand to calculate your vehicle's deadline. Check its recorded expiry and confirm with RTD or the authorised centre. A used import's first Cyprus registration is not necessarily the starting point for a new four-year exemption.
Book with time to resolve problems
Ask the centre what documents it needs, the current charge, how results are recorded and how a failed test is handled. We do not quote a test fee, retest price or repair deadline because current primary evidence for those exact figures remains incomplete.
Keep the appointment confirmation, but do not treat an appointment as permission to drive with an expired certificate or another missing legal requirement. If the vehicle cannot lawfully be driven, ask about lawful transport to the centre.
Prepare without disguising defects
Check obvious items such as functioning lights, tyre condition and warning lamps before the visit. Arrange necessary maintenance or diagnosis with a workshop. Do not conceal a warning or temporarily alter the vehicle to hide a problem from the inspector.
Bring information on modifications where relevant and ask whether any additional approval is required. Keep service and repair records available. A routine service and the statutory inspection serve different purposes; paying for one does not automatically complete the other.
Understand the result
If the vehicle fails, obtain the written findings and ask which defects require action before further use. Confirm the repair and retest process with the centre, including any deadline and charge, rather than relying on an old online fee table.
After a pass, check that the certificate and official record identify the correct vehicle and next expiry. Save the result with your ownership documents. If a record fails to update, resolve that discrepancy before relying on it for another transaction.
An MOT pass records the outcome of a statutory inspection. It does not establish ownership, outstanding finance, service history or the absence of developing mechanical faults. This is an editorial distinction, not a quoted government warranty statement.
Buying, transferring and renewing tax
For a purchase, commission a separate pre-purchase inspection. For a transfer, ask what documents are required if the current test has expired. For road tax, verify the record used by the renewal service.
Ask your insurer about policy conditions when a test expires or a defect is discovered. Do not assume every insurance consequence is identical across cover types or that a certificate guarantees payment of a claim.
