Cyprus motor-insurance law requires third-party liability cover for vehicle use within its scope. That concerns liability to other people; it is not a promise to repair your own car. The consolidated legislation, linked by the Motor Insurers' Fund, is available in Greek and includes listed amendments through 2026.

Optional products may add theft, fire, damage to your vehicle or other benefits. “Comprehensive” is a product description to read carefully, not shorthand for every loss being covered. Ask for the policy wording and schedule before deciding.

Cyprus Auto Guide provides general information. It does not arrange insurance, assess your risk for an insurer or promise a quotation or saving.

Give Insurers The Same Information

Provide accurate vehicle identity, value and specification, driver details, licence history, intended use and any modifications. Tell the insurer if the car is imported, high-performance or used for work. Do not compare quotations based on different drivers or use restrictions and call the cheapest one equivalent.

For a used-car purchase, obtain a quotation before committing. Ask what documents are needed and when cover can begin. The seller's policy is not your confirmation of cover.

Read These Parts Together

Policy item Question to ask
Insured drivers and use Who can drive, for which purposes and with what restrictions?
Own-damage excess What do you pay for each type of claim?
Theft and security Are keys, tracking or storage conditions relevant?
Repair and replacement Who chooses the repairer, and is a replacement vehicle included?
Assistance What breakdown, towing and recovery are provided?
Territory Exactly where do liability, own-damage and assistance apply?

Ask how claims history, cancellation, renewal and changes to the vehicle are handled. Keep the insurer's written answers with the schedule.

Green Line Journeys Need A Separate Check

Do not assume cover in Republic-controlled areas extends unchanged to the northern part. Establish territorial third-party cover, damage/theft cover and recovery separately. With a rental vehicle, contract permission is another requirement; insurance cannot override the rental agreement. See the Green Line guide and rental protection guide.

If An Accident Happens

Prioritise safety and call 112 for an emergency. Contact your insurer or its accident-assistance service using the policy details. When safe, record the location, time, vehicles, registration numbers and relevant insurance information. Follow police and insurer instructions rather than assuming the same procedure applies to every incident.

For uninsured, unknown or foreign-plated vehicle cases, the Motor Insurers' Fund publishes category-specific steps. Those include evidence and notification requirements; read the relevant category promptly. MIF is not a general substitute for your insurer's ordinary claim process.

Keep photographs, reports, receipts and correspondence. Ask before authorising non-emergency repairs where the claim requires inspection. If a defect or expired roadworthiness certificate is involved, disclose it and obtain case-specific advice instead of assuming a universal insurance outcome.
