The 2026 Deadline Has Passed

The final 2026 renewal deadline without surcharge was 31 March 2026. Later renewal attracted EUR 10 plus 10% of the road tax due for that year.

This is a historical deadline for 2026, not an announcement of the 2027 renewal window. A page or reminder quoting 11 March 2026 without the extension is incomplete. The extension and surcharge are described in KNEWS's dated report; the government also published an extension notice, although its full page was blocked during our check.

“Road tax” is the familiar English term. The official item being renewed is the vehicle circulation licence, άδεια κυκλοφορίας. Its validity should be checked for the particular vehicle and period rather than inferred from a seller's statement that the car is “taxed”.

Prepare The Vehicle Record

Use the government road-tax service to reach the official renewal route. Have the registration details and the information requested by the service ready. Check that insurance and roadworthiness records are current and correctly associated with the vehicle before attempting payment.

If the service reports a missing or expired record, clarify it with the responsible insurer, inspection centre or RTD. Repeated payment attempts will not correct an underlying record mismatch. Do not send identity or payment details to an unsolicited message claiming to renew your tax.

Read The Amount And Period Before Paying

Confirm the registration number, licence period, amount due and any arrears or surcharge displayed. A figure quoted for a different car is not a reliable estimate for yours. Vehicle characteristics and registration history can affect the calculation; this guide does not provide a universal tax calculator.

Keep the official receipt or confirmation. If a payment appears in your bank account but the renewal status remains unclear, use the service's support process before paying again. Bank authorisation alone is not the same as a confirmed renewed vehicle record.

If You Will Not Use The Car

Do not assume leaving a car in a garage automatically records non-use with the authority. Ask RTD about the formal immobilisation process, when it takes effect and the steps required before using the vehicle again. Also ask your insurer what cover remains appropriate while it is stored.

An expired licence, an immobilisation declaration and a cancellation are different statuses. Confirm which applies to your vehicle. This article does not establish a right to drive to an inspection appointment with expired documents.

Buying Or Transferring A Vehicle

Check the actual validity record with the seller and processing office. A payment receipt can relate to an earlier period or another stage of the transaction. Coordinate the ownership transfer, roadworthiness check and insurance start date before handover.
