Start Before You Leave The Parking Space
Traffic in the Republic of Cyprus drives on the left.
If you normally drive on the right, give the first journey your full attention. Choose a straightforward route and set it before moving. Learning unfamiliar controls while negotiating the airport exit adds a task you can avoid.
Adjust seat, mirrors and steering position. Locate indicators, wipers, headlights, hazard lights and parking brake. Ask the rental staff to explain any unfamiliar selector or warning. Confirm the speedometer units: Visit Cyprus states that road distances and speed limits use kilometres and km/h.
Turning Is Where The Habit Needs Checking
At a junction, identify the lane you will enter before turning. After leaving a car park, petrol station or quiet side road, deliberately check that you are on the correct side. Do not use the position of one other driver as a substitute for signs and markings.
A right turn can involve crossing an opposing traffic stream. Wait for a safe opportunity and follow the local control, including signals and priority signs. If you miss your turn, continue safely and let navigation recalculate. A sudden correction can be more dangerous than a short detour.
Roundabouts: Read The Approach
Look for destination signs and lane arrows early, slow down and follow the applicable give-way markings. Watch traffic already circulating and other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians near exits. Keep to the lane appropriate to the marked route and avoid cutting across another vehicle to reach an exit.
Roundabouts are not all laid out the same way. Do not memorise a single lane formula and apply it regardless of signs. If you are unsure of the lane or cannot exit safely, follow the marked route and find a safe way to continue rather than forcing the manoeuvre.
Reduce The First-Day Workload
An automatic rental can reduce manual gear changes, but familiarise yourself with that car too. Choose a size you can place confidently on the road and in the parking available at your destination. Ask a passenger to handle directions without distracting commentary.
Allow time after a long or late flight. If you are too tired to drive safely, arrange another transfer and discuss collection timing with the supplier. This is a practical driving decision, not a reason to rush because the booking clock has started.
Keep Road Rules Separate From Confidence
Knowing which side to use does not answer speed, child-seat, phone or alcohol rules. Read the road-rules guide, and check licence requirements before travelling. Stay within signed limits and reduce speed further when visibility, surface or traffic calls for it.
For collection, the Larnaca Airport and Paphos Airport guides explain why the desk, rental parking and return entrance may be different points. Save your accommodation's vehicle entrance as well as its postal address.
A Short Departure Check
- All occupants seated and appropriately restrained.
- Mirrors and controls adjusted while stationary.
- Route selected, with a planned first stop if needed.
- Clear understanding of the lane at the exit.
- Branch and assistance contacts saved.
Continue the same deliberate checks throughout the visit, particularly when restarting after a stop. Familiarity should make the journey calmer, not remove attention from signs or changing conditions.
