Ask About The Deposit, Not Just Payment

Before booking with a debit card, ask whether that card can secure the rental at collection. The platform accepting an online payment does not establish that the supplier will accept the same card for its deposit. The decision belongs to the particular branch, vehicle category and rate conditions.

Obtain an answer that identifies the card type, main driver and booking. If a supplier requires a credit card in the main driver's name, a companion's card or a virtual card may not satisfy the condition. Do not rely on a general customer-service answer that does not address the actual offer.

Understand The Hold

A pre-authorisation reserves part of the card's available spending capacity. It is different from a completed charge, although its practical effect can be similar while the funds are unavailable. Ask whether the supplier places a hold or takes a payment, and how release is requested after return.

The rental price is not the deposit. The deposit is not necessarily the damage excess. Fuel, late return or other contractual charges can also affect the final settlement. The insurance guide explains why buying extra protection does not automatically remove every guarantee requirement.

A Provider Example With An Important Wording Issue

Hertz Cyprus's published terms say an accepted credit or debit card is needed for payments and pre-authorisations. Its guarantee paragraph specifically refers to a credit-card hold. The same page lists deposits ranging from EUR 300 to EUR 950 by vehicle group.

That wording is a reason to obtain booking-specific confirmation, not a basis for promising that every debit card works. Ask which statement applies to your exact category, card and branch. A different supplier's policy can be stricter or more permissive; neither becomes Cyprus-wide law.

Work Out The Available Balance

Budget separately for the rental payment, deposit and ordinary travel spending. A pending hotel hold or another hire can reduce the balance available when you reach the desk. Check with your card issuer whether overseas transactions and pre-authorisations are enabled and whether a daily limit could interrupt collection.

Do not treat a advertised deposit reduction as a saving until you know its cost, conditions and excluded damage. For premium or sports categories, ask about additional cards and larger holds before choosing a car. For an automatic, compare the category you actually book rather than the cheapest manual example.

Questions To Send Before Paying

  • Is my physical card accepted for both rental payment and the guarantee?
  • Must it be a credit card, and must it show the main driver's name?
  • What exact amount will be blocked or charged for this vehicle and rate?
  • Is any additional amount required for fuel or optional equipment?
  • What happens if the card is rejected at collection?
  • Who requests release, and what documentation is supplied after return?

Keep the answer with the booking conditions. Never send full card numbers, security codes or photographs of both sides of the card through an ordinary enquiry form.

If The Money Remains Unavailable

Retain the final invoice, return report and payment reference. Ask the supplier whether it has released the authorisation or applied a charge. Then ask the issuing bank which transaction is still pending and what evidence it needs. A release request and the date the balance becomes usable can differ.

For a disputed charge, identify the amount, reason and supporting contract clause rather than treating every remaining hold as a damage bill. Keep communication in writing. Return to the rental booking guide to compare deposit rules alongside pickup, fuel and cancellation.
